Everything I do answers the same question: what things are made of, and how to make them last. Analyse, measure, preserve. That thread took me from conservation-restoration to the laboratory, from the laboratory to data science, and from there to putting new technologies at the service of preserving cultural and natural heritage: art and urbanism, ecology and sustainability.

I analyse materials to understand how they break down and how to slow that decay: spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging and microscopy in the laboratory, and deep learning models that recognise a material from its spectrum or spot an anomaly in the water from video. I have scaled those tools up to conserve both cultural and natural heritage.

That is also where my bond with nature comes from: from scientific diving in the Posidonia meadows to systems that watch for spills and plastics in real time, sustainability is part of the very same work of conserving. And my bond with art comes from the same place: I paint the plants and animals I observe, because capturing what fascinates me is another way of caring for it.
